More than 16 million Americans were mobilized to serve in the armed forces during World War II. There were 405,399 U.S. deaths during the conflict (official records kept from 1941-46). The total number of U.S. military deaths in outright battle was 292,131. That was approximately one death for every 40 soldiers deployed. During the American Civil War, it was an astounding one in five.
