Orville and Wilbur Wright were American inventors and aviation pioneers who achieved the first successful powered, controlled airplane flight. In 1903, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, their Wright Flyer demonstrated sustained flight with a pilot onboard, changing transportation forever. The brothers combined mechanical skill with careful scientific experimentation, developing wind tunnels, efficient propellers, and a system of three-axis control that made airplanes practical. Working as bicycle makers, they funded and built their own aircraft.
