The M40 155 mm Gun Motor Carriage was a powerful self-propelled artillery vehicle developed by the United States during World War II and used extensively in the Korean War. Built on a modified M4A3 Sherman tank chassis, it mounted the formidable 155 mm "Long Tom" gun, giving it exceptional range and firepower for long-range bombardment. The open-topped fighting compartment allowed the eight-man crew to operate efficiently while providing space for ammunition handling and gun servicing. With its reliable Ford GAA V8 engine and wide tracks, the M40 offered solid mobility across difficult terrain. Often paired with the M4 High-Speed Tractor for ammunition supply, the M40 delivered fast, accurate, and sustained fire support, becoming a cornerstone of American heavy artillery operations.
