James "Jimmy" Doolittle was an American aviation pioneer, military officer, and national hero best known for leading the Doolittle Raid during World War II. In April 1942, he commanded a daring strike in which U.S. bombers launched from an aircraft carrier to attack Japan, boosting Allied morale after Pearl Harbor. A skilled pilot and aeronautical engineer, Doolittle set numerous flying records and helped advance instrument flying before the war. Rising to the rank of general, he later commanded U.S. air forces in Europe, playing a key role in achieving Allied air superiority and shaping modern air power doctrine.
