Grover Cleveland (1837-1908) was the 22nd and 24th president of the United States, the only leader to serve two nonconsecutive terms (1885-1889 and 1893-1897). A Democrat known for his honesty and independence, he fought political corruption, patronage, and special interests. Before his presidency, Cleveland built a reputation as a reform-minded mayor of Buffalo and governor of New York. His first term emphasized civil service reform and fiscal conservatism, while his second term was dominated by economic hardship during the Panic of 1893. Cleveland opposed high tariffs, imperialism, and free silver, advocating instead for sound money and limited government. Though sometimes unpopular, he is remembered as a principled and steadfast defender of integrity in American politics.
