The French-style khaki pith helmet has its roots in the broader history of the pith helmet, which was widely used by European colonial forces in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The pith helmet itself originated from the Filipino salakot, a traditional lightweight headgear that was later adopted by Spanish colonial troops. The French military incorporated the pith helmet into their uniforms, particularly in Mainland Southeast Asia during the 19th century. French colonial troops found the design effective for protection against the humid climate, and it became a standard part of their gear. Over time, the helmet evolved into a khaki-colored version, which was better suited for camouflage in tropical and desert environments. The khaki pith helmet was commonly worn by French forces in Indochina, Africa, and the Middle East, where it provided shade and ventilation in extreme heat. While its practical use declined after World War II, it remains an iconic symbol of colonial-era military attire.
