Billy Bishop (1894-1956) was a Canadian fighter pilot and one of the highest-scoring aces of the First World War. Serving with the Royal Flying Corps, he was officially credited with 72 aerial victories, making him the top ace of the British Empire. Bishop flew aircraft such as the Nieuport 17 and the S.E.5a, earning a reputation for bold, aggressive tactics and solo patrols behind enemy lines. In 1917, he was awarded the Victoria Cross for a daring attack on a German aerodrome. His exploits made him a national hero in Canada and a prominent figure in Allied propaganda. After the war, Bishop remained involved in aviation and helped promote air power development in Canada.
