The Volksgrenadier, or "People's Grenadier," was a type of German infantry division established in late 1944 during World War II. Created to bolster the depleted German forces, Volksgrenadier divisions were designed to be more mobile and adaptable. They typically consisted of fewer men than standard divisions and were equipped with a mix of standard and newly developed weapons, including the Sturmgewehr 44 assault rifle. These divisions often included younger recruits and older veterans, reflecting the desperation of Germany's late-war manpower situation. Despite their innovative structure, Volksgrenadier divisions struggled with logistical issues and combat effectiveness as the war drew to a close.
