About the TBF Avenger and VT-4
Introduced in 1942, the TBF Avenger was Grumman's rugged single-engine torpedo bomber, carrying a three-man crew of pilot, turret gunner and radioman/bombardier along with a torpedo or bomb load in its internal bay and defensive .50-caliber guns. VT-4 flew Avengers from USS Ranger as part of the British Home Fleet in the Atlantic during the second half of 1943, taking part in Operation Leader, a strike against German and Norwegian shipping near Bod, Norway, on October 4, 1943 - one of the few U.S. Navy carrier operations conducted in northern European waters during the war.
