About the TBF Avenger and VT-8
VT-8 was the first U.S. Navy squadron to receive the Grumman TBF Avenger, with deliveries beginning in January 1942; a detachment of six Avengers first saw combat with the squadron at the Battle of Midway that June. Powered by a radial engine capable of speeds up to 275 mph and a range exceeding 1,000 miles, the three-man Avenger carried a torpedo or bombs and defended itself with .50-caliber guns, going on to serve in major carrier battles including Midway and the Philippine Sea.
