Stan Stokes. In 1927, Pan American airlines acquired its first flying boat: the twin-engined S-36 Sikorsky. President Juan Trippe preferred the versatility of these planes as they did not require suitable airfields for landing, able to touch down on any river, lagoon, or harbor. Flying boats — more commonly referred to as "Clippers" — developed rapidly over the years, and, by 1939, the massive Boeing 314 was operational: an impressive aircraft measuring 106 feet long with a wingspan of 152 feet. This print depicts a Boeing 314 — the "Dixie Clipper," the first aircraft to offer regular Transatlantic passenger service, and the plane that brought FDR to the Casablanca Conference in 1943 — docked in the south seas, as a Martin M-130 flies overhead. Signed by the artist and Captain Sture Sigfred, a man who flew 48 round-trip, Pan Am Clipper treks over the Pacific and an Air Transport Command pilot during World War II. 16"x 11½".
