About the SPAD S.A.4
The SPAD S.A series was an unusual French design that carried its observer/gunner in a forward nacelle mounted ahead of the engine and propeller, an arrangement intended to give the gunner a clear field of fire. The S.A.4 variant reverted to an 80hp Le Rhone rotary engine after overheating problems with the more powerful engine used in the earlier S.A.2. The type saw limited service with France and Russia before being superseded by more conventional fighter designs.
