As a young officer in the Virginia militia, George Washington played a pivotal role in the early stages of the French and Indian War when he was sent to the Ohio Country in 1753 to deliver a message to the French demanding they leave the territory claimed by the British. In 1754, Washington led a surprise attack on a small French force at Jumonville Glen in the Ohio Country, which is considered the first major conflict of the French and Indian War. Following the Jumonville Glen skirmish, Washington constructed a small fort called Fort Necessity where he was later forced to surrender to French forces after a battle. Despite the surrender at Fort Necessity, Washington's experience inthe French and Indian War provided him with valuable combat knowledge and leadership skills that would be crucial in the American Revolutionary War.
