Warren. Officially opened in 1964, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel had been named one of the "Five Wonders of the Modern World" by Reader's Digest magazine. A culmination of decade-long efforts of local businessmen, the plan was to open up the remote Eastern Shore to the bustling Virginia mainland. The $200 million project ended up being a series of 17.6-mile-long bridges, tunnels, islands, and trestle located in the middle of Chesapeake Bay. It also ended ferry service to "Ocean Highway" which once shuttled millions of cars between the Shore and Hampton Roads. 128 pages, 194 B&W photos, 6½"x 9¼", softcover.
