The Douglas A-4 Skyhawk is a single-seat, subsonic carrier-capable light attack aircraft. Originally designated A4D, it was developed by Douglas Aircraft Company (later McDonnell Douglas) as a replacement for the propeller-driven A-1 Skyraider. Compact and lightweight, the Skyhawk had a maximum takeoff weight of 24,500 pounds—half that of the Navy's specification. It featured a short-span delta wing, tricycle undercarriage, and a single turbojet engine. The Skyhawk's five hardpoints supported various munitions, and it pioneered "buddy" air-to-air refueling. Over 2,960 were produced, including 555 two-seat trainers
