The German-Austria union was a short-lived republic set up after World War I. With the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Austria did not consider itself a viable nation, having lost agricultural lands and industrial areas, and planned to join Germany. However, post-war treaties forbid the alliance, and the Republic of Austria was set up from the core of German-Austria. In an effort to quickly release currency for the new nation, banknotes of the Austro-Hungarian Empire were overprinted with "Deutsch-Osterreich." Issued between 1919 and 1922, the notes still read their original issue date. This Krone note is dated 1916. 4¼"x 2¾".
