About the subject
Germany fielded a range of gun-armed armored vehicles during World War II — assault guns, tank destroyers and self-propelled artillery — built on both German and captured chassis. The Sturmgeschütz, originally an infantry-support vehicle controlled by the artillery arm and mainly built on the PzKpfw III chassis, ended the war having destroyed more enemy tanks than the Panzer force. Tank-destroyer variants ranged from the Marder series, built on captured French or Czech chassis, to heavier Jagdpanzer types such as the Nashorn, Elefant and Jagdpanther. Self-propelled artillery such as the Wespe, Grille, Hummel and Sturmpanzer gave the Panzer divisions mobile fire support. The book covers the crews who operated these vehicles, whose duties differed strategically, operationally and logistically from those of the Panzertruppen.
