About Operation Market Garden
Devised by Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery following the Normandy landings, Operation Market Garden used British, American and Polish airborne troops to seize a series of bridges in the Netherlands between Eindhoven and Arnhem, aiming to open a route into Germany. Strong German resistance and the Allies' failure to secure a crossing of the Rhine at Arnhem led to the operation's failure, prolonging the war by several months. Hotel Hartenstein at Oosterbeek served as the headquarters of the British 1st Airborne Division during the fighting.
