About John Tyler
John Tyler (1790-1862) served as the 10th U.S. president from 1841 to 1845. A Virginian and former vice president under William Henry Harrison, he became the first vice president to assume the presidency following a president's death, establishing a key constitutional precedent. Originally a Whig, Tyler broke with his party after vetoing bills to reestablish a national bank and was expelled from it, but his administration achieved the 1845 annexation of Texas and negotiated treaties with China and Britain.
