About Franklin Pierce
Franklin Pierce (1804-1869) served as the 14th U.S. president from 1853 to 1857. A Democrat from New Hampshire who had served in the Mexican-American War, Pierce sought to preserve national unity, but his support for the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which allowed new territories to decide the slavery question by popular sovereignty, deepened sectional tensions and contributed to violent conflict in Kansas. His administration also pursued expansionist policies, including efforts to acquire Cuba. Pierce lost all three of his children during his lifetime, and historians generally regard his presidency as one that failed to ease the divisions that led to the Civil War.
