About the F-4 Phantom II
Developed by McDonnell Aircraft for the U.S. Navy and later adopted by the Air Force and Marine Corps, the twin-engine F-4 Phantom II is an all-weather, long-range supersonic interceptor and fighter-bomber capable of speeds over Mach 2.2. The 57th FIS flew air defense intercept missions from Naval Air Station Keflavik, Iceland, guarding NATO's North Atlantic approaches during the Cold War.
