The F-105 Thunderchief was a supersonic fighter-bomber developed by Republic Aviation for the United States Air Force during the Cold War. Entering service in the late 1950s, it was designed primarily for high-speed, low-altitude strike missions and could carry a larger bomb load than many contemporary fighters. Powered by a single turbojet engine, the aircraft achieved speeds exceeding Mach 2 while maintaining impressive range and payload capacity. During the Vietnam War, the F-105 became the primary strike aircraft in the early years of the conflict, enduring intense enemy defenses and suffering heavy losses. Despite these challenges, its speed, durability, and versatility earned it lasting respect among pilots and aviation historians as one of America's most significant combat aircraft.
