About the Confederate Army
Formed in 1861, the Army of the Confederate States drew its largest early contingents from Virginia, and its ranks were made up largely of volunteers rather than professional soldiers. Equipment was not standardized and uniforms varied widely across units. Robert E. Lee commanded the Army of Northern Virginia, the Confederacy's principal field army in the Eastern Theater, from 1862 until the war's end in 1865.
