About the Bf 109
First introduced in 1937, the Messerschmitt Bf 109 became the backbone of the Luftwaffe, prized for its speed, agility and firepower. Powered by a liquid-cooled Daimler-Benz engine reaching speeds over 400 mph, it was built in greater numbers than any other German aircraft of World War II, with more than 33,000 produced.
