About Hans-Joachim Marseille and the Bf 109
Hans-Joachim Marseille was a German Luftwaffe fighter ace who rose to fame during the North African campaign, earning the nickname "Star of Africa" for his aerial combat skill. He was credited with 158 confirmed victories, mostly against Allied pilots, before his death in 1942 at age 22 following an aircraft malfunction. The Messerschmitt Bf 109 he flew was a single-engine fighter powered by a liquid-cooled Daimler-Benz engine, first introduced in 1937 and produced in greater numbers than any other German aircraft of the war.
