Raised in 1861, the 1st United States Sharpshooters, commonly known as Berdan's Sharpshooters, were an elite Union infantry regiment commanded by Colonel Hiram Berdan. Carefully selected for their marksmanship, recruits had to pass rigorous shooting tests before acceptance. Dressed in distinctive green uniforms instead of standard blue, they specialized in skirmishing, reconnaissance, and precision fire against Confederate officers and artillery crews. Equipped initially with target rifles and later the Sharps breech-loading rifle, they offered greater accuracy and faster rate of fire. The unit served in major campaigns, including the Peninsula, Antietam, and Gettysburg, earning a reputation for discipline, courage, and deadly effectiveness on the battlefield. Their legacy helped shape modern sniper tactics and demonstrated the military value of specialized, highly trained marksmen in organized units.
