The lead ship in her own class of cruisers, the USS Alaska was ordered in September of 1940 and entered service in June of 1944. Though she saw limited service in World War II due to her late commissioning, she did assist in the Iwo Jima and Okinawa campaigns, providing anti-aircraft support for various carrier tasks forces. After the war, she helped in the occupation of Korea. She was decommissioned on February 17, 1947.
