About the book
Dwight Eisenhower described Andrew Jackson Higgins, designer of the landing craft covered here, as "the man who won the war for us." This first of two volumes on US landing craft covers the WWII LCP(L), LCP(R), LCV, LCVP, LCM and LCS(L), along with the larger LCI (Landing Craft, Infantry). Built in the tens of thousands, these vessels put Allied troops ashore in North Africa, the Aleutians, Normandy and across the Pacific; though many were designed as essentially disposable, a number continued in service through the Vietnam War, some heavily armed with rocket launchers for close-in support of troops going ashore.
