A U.S. Cavalryman during the Old West was a soldier assigned to protect settlements, patrol vast territories, and enforce federal authority across the American frontier. Mounted on horseback, cavalrymen traveled long distances through deserts, plains, mountains, and forests, often facing harsh weather and difficult terrain. They typically carried a rifle or carbine, a revolver, and a saber, along with supplies for themselves and their horses. Cavalry units guarded forts, escorted wagon trains, pursued outlaws, and participated in conflicts with Native American nations. Life was demanding, with long periods of routine patrols interrupted by sudden combat or emergencies. Cavalrymen wore distinctive uniforms, including blue wool coats and campaign hats, although clothing varied with conditions. Their horses were essential partners, providing transportation, mobility, and an advantage in battle across the rugged frontier.
