About the Trapdoor Springfield

Designed in 1865-66 by Erskine S. Allin to replace the patchwork of small arms the U.S. Army had fielded during the Civil War, the Trapdoor Springfield used metallic cartridges and could be loaded in a single action, increasing its rate of fire over earlier muzzle-loaders. Small groups of U.S. soldiers and civilians armed with the rifle turned back larger Native American forces in two engagements in August 1867, and the rifle and its variants went on to serve in U.S. conflicts through the following three decades, especially on the American frontier. Drawing on firsthand accounts from soldiers, their Native American opponents, and civilian users such as buffalo hunters, the book covers the rifle's role during the Indian Wars.
