About the Battle of Shiloh
After the Union capture of Forts Henry and Donelson, Maj. Gen. Henry Halleck planned to combine Ulysses S. Grant's Army of West Tennessee with Don Carlos Buell's Army of the Ohio to move against the rail hub at Corinth, Mississippi. The newly formed Confederate Army of the Mississippi, under Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston, attacked Grant's encamped forces at Shiloh on the morning of April 6, 1862, before Buell's army arrived. Johnston was killed that afternoon, and Buell's troops joined Grant's for a counterattack the next morning that forced a Confederate withdrawal under P.G.T. Beauregard. The two-day battle resulted in nearly 24,000 combined casualties, one of the costliest engagements of the war to that point.
