About the book
After the German 17th Army retreated from the Kuban bridgehead across the Kerch Strait in October 1943, the Red Army cut off its land connection through the Perekop Isthmus that November. A major Soviet offensive in April 1944 pushed German forces back toward Sevastopol, which fell on May 9, 1944 after German and Romanian ships conducted a large-scale evacuation under constant air and artillery attack, with around 57,000 men lost in the process.
