About the Spitfire
A single-engine, low-wing monoplane, the Spitfire formed the backbone of RAF Fighter Command alongside the Hawker Hurricane during the Battle of Britain. The Spitfire V entered service in 1941 powered by the 1,440 hp Merlin engine and was later developed into the Mk IX, flown by many of the RAF's leading aces.
