Richard Bong was the highest-scoring American fighter ace of World War II, credited with 40 aerial victories. A pilot in the U.S. Army Air Forces, he flew the P-38 Lightning in the Pacific Theater, where he gained fame for his aggressive yet skillful flying style. Bong earned the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary combat achievements and bravery against Japanese forces. Despite his success, he remained humble and closely connected to his fellow pilots. After completing his combat tour, he returned to the United States as a test pilot. Tragically, he was killed in a plane crash in 1945 while testing a jet aircraft. Bong's legacy endures as a symbol of courage, patriotism, and excellence in aerial combat.
