About Gabby Gabreski's P-47
The P-47 Thunderbolt, nicknamed the "Jug," was one of the largest and heaviest single-engine fighters of World War II, powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine and armed with eight .50-caliber machine guns. Flying it with the 56th Fighter Group, Gabreski achieved 28 confirmed aerial victories in the European Theater, making him the leading American ace in the European air war before being taken prisoner after a July 1944 crash-landing in Germany.
