About the MiG-21R and the 263rd Squadron
The reconnaissance variant of the widely produced, delta-wing MiG-21, the MiG-21R carried camera pods and sensor equipment in place of some of the interceptor version's armament. The Soviet 263rd Independent Reconnaissance Air Squadron deployed to Afghanistan in early 1980 and flew from Kabul Air Base from that April until 1984, during the Soviet-Afghan War.
