About the Kaman Synchropter
In 1945, 26-year-old Charles Kaman incorporated a small, underfinanced company to pursue a synchropter design, using a pair of intermeshing rotors with servo-tabs to twist the blades in flight, a concept that made the aircraft easier to hover than a conventional helicopter and eliminated the need for a tail rotor. After selling early prototypes mainly as crop dusters, Kaman's company was rescued from near-bankruptcy in 1949 when the Navy purchased 29 HTK-1/TH-43E trainers, 83 HOK-1/OH-43D observation and rescue helicopters, and 24 HUK-1/UH-43C transport and utility helicopters, aircraft that remained in service into 1965 and whose design was later developed into the turbine-powered H-43 Huskie flown by the U.S. Air Force in Vietnam.
