About the flintlock musket
A smoothbore, notoriously inaccurate weapon, the flintlock musket fired when a spring-driven hammer struck a piece of flint against a steel "frizzen," showering sparks into a pan of priming powder. The resulting flash passed through a small touch-hole to ignite the main powder charge in the barrel, propelling the lead ball, a sequence soldiers had to complete by hand for every shot, as this figure demonstrates while tearing open a paper cartridge to reload.
