About the Book
When US forces deployed to Korea in June 1950, they were dressed and equipped much as they had been at the end of World War II, but by 1953 significant changes had reshaped their gear. Early shortages and rapid troop movements forced widespread improvisation, including for cold-weather clothing, while the shift to static, position-based warfare in 1951 let soldiers and Marines customize their uniforms. Flak jackets were introduced across both services, and the infantryman's basic combat load was lightened, often to little more than fatigues, a flak vest and a helmet for men on the line.
