About the Marder Tank Destroyers
The appearance of Soviet T-34 and KV tanks in 1941 forced the Wehrmacht to field the more powerful 7.5cm PaK 40 antitank gun, but the towed weapon was heavy and vulnerable to counter-fire. Zaloga details how German engineers mounted the gun on existing, increasingly obsolete light tank chassis to create the Marder family: the Marder I on captured French Lorraine Chenillette and later Hotchkiss H39 and FCM36 chassis, the Marder II on the PzKpfw II chassis, and the Marder III, the most significant of the three, on the Czech-built PzKpfw 38(t) chassis. Marder production peaked in 1942, when the type made up over 18 percent of new German tank output, before ending in 1944.
