About the book
The book follows the German high command in the west, Oberbefehlshaber West (Ob. West), headquartered at Saint-Germain-en-Laye, through its succession of commanders: Gerd von Rundstedt, who took the post in October 1940 and again in March 1942, and who was in the role when Allied forces landed in Normandy in June 1944; Erwin von Witzleben, who held the post from 1941 to early 1942; and Gunther von Kluge, appointed in July 1944 after Hitler relieved von Rundstedt of command. Of these commanders and Erwin Rommel, who also served in the theater, three died for their involvement or suspected sympathy with the plot against Hitler: von Witzleben was executed, and von Kluge and Rommel took their own lives.
