A French infantryman in World War I, often called a "poilu" (meaning "hairy one," symbolizing toughness), endured some of the harshest conditions of the war. Fighting primarily in trench warfare along the Western Front, he faced constant threats from artillery, machine-gun fire, gas attacks, and disease. Early in the war, he wore a bright blue coat and red trousers, later replaced by the more practical horizon-blue uniform and steel Adrian helmet. Armed with the Lebel rifle, he participated in brutal battles such as Verdun and the Somme. Despite exhaustion, mud, and fear, the poilu became a symbol of French resilience and determination, defending his homeland with courage, endurance, and a strong sense of duty under relentless and unforgiving conditions.
