About Fort Fisher
Built near Kure Beach, North Carolina, under the direction of Col. William Lamb and modeled on Russian-engineered earthwork designs, Fort Fisher grew into the largest fortification in the Confederacy, protecting blockade runners supplying Wilmington and earning the nickname "Confederate Gibraltar." Its defenders repulsed a Union assault in December 1864, but after a massive naval bombardment and renewed attack, the fort fell to Union forces on January 15, 1865, closing the Confederacy's last major open seaport.
