About Royce Williams' Dogfight
On November 18, 1952, Lt. Royce Williams was flying combat air patrol from USS Oriskany when he found himself alone against seven Soviet MiG-15s over the Sea of Japan. In a roughly 35-minute engagement, he shot down four of the MiGs and brought his badly damaged Panther back to the carrier. Because the Soviet Union was not an official combatant in the Korean War, the engagement was kept classified for decades; Williams received the Navy Cross for the action in 2023.
