About This Aircraft and the Korean War Corsair
Capt. Phillip DeLong, a World War II Marine ace, led a division of VMF-312 Corsairs off the USS Bataan on April 1, 1951, scoring the first Marine Corsair aerial victory of the Korean War during an armed reconnaissance mission. Beyond its wartime fame in the Pacific, the F4U-4 Corsair remained a frontline U.S. Navy and Marine Corps fighter-bomber into the Korean War, where its heavy weapons load and ability to operate at low level suited it to close air support and ground-attack missions.
