About the CANT Z.501
Designed by engineer Filippo Zappata for Cantieri Riuniti dell'Adriatico (C.R.D.A.) in the 1930s, the Z.501 was a central-hull seaplane with a high wing and lateral floats, powered by a 900-hp Isotta Fraschini Asso XI engine reaching about 275 km/h. It first saw operational service during the Spanish Civil War and was later used extensively by Italy's Regia Aeronautica for patrol, search and rescue duties in the Mediterranean during World War II, armed with three 7.7mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns.
