Stan Stokes. Though the Nazis had been developing the technology for years, the VF-1 pulsejet-powered cruise missile — nicknamed the "Buzzbomb" or "Doodlebug" — was, due to difficulty with accuracy and range, not operational until 1944. After the Allied landing at Normandy, however, the VF-1 was put to use targeting British civilian areas with, at its peak, more than a hundred being launched every day. The RAF, in turn, solicited the help of skilled aviators to help destroy these terrorizing weapons before they hit the ground. Among the most successful Buzzbomb exterminators was Wing Commander Roland Beamont who took out 32 missiles during his celebrated career. This limited edition print depicts Beamont's Tempest V escaping the debris of yet another destroyed Doodlebug over the English countryside in July of 1944. This 16"x 11½" print is signed by the artist.
