The lead ship in her own class of battleships, the USS Iowa (BB-61) — nicknamed the "Big Stick" while serving in Korea — began her service in the Pacific in 1944. Decommissioned and recommissioned multiple times over her decades-long career, the Iowa was retired for good in 1990.
