Nelson & Appel. Established in San Pedro, California, Fort MacArthur - named for Lt. Gen. Arthur MacArthur, a Civil War hero and father of Gen. Douglas MacArthur - became the U.S. Army's major regional induction center following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, processing more than three-quarters of a million soldiers into World War II.

This photo-essay examines the history of "Fort Mac," from its formation as a remote military reservation in 1888; through World Wars I & II and it roles as a reserve base in 1946, a Nike missile installation in 1954, and again a reserve base following the Vietnam War; to its roles in transforming San Pedro into the Port of Los Angeles and in integrating the Army in the late 1930s. 128 pages, approximately 200 B&W photographs, 6½"x 9¼", softcover.
