Known as the first USN squadron to be deployed with the F-4 Phantom II, the VF-74 "Bedevilers" traded their Skyrays for the F4H-1 in 1961. After 20 years, VF-74 would operate three variants of the Phantom 13 times on Mediterranean cruises and twice to SEA. In 1981, the aircraft received a special paint scheme to commemorate 20 years as "First in Phantoms" squadron.
